Your Guide to Reading Between the Tines

Dark Days Challenge at (not so) Urban Hennery

Caitlin D. of Feasting on Pelops just tipped me off to an interesting challenge going on at (not so) Urban Hennery(Not so) Urban Hennery is a fun site that was first created by a husband and wife team wrangling chickens in Big City, WA.  (Think “shenanigans.”  Shenanigans are good, right?)  They’ve left the city but kept the chickens, and now they write about their chickens, local food, and cooking as well.  (Think “info.”  Lots of good info.  Info is good, right?)

Anywho, they have posted the Dark Days challenge for this winter.  The task?  Read more after the jump.

The “Rules”:

  1. Cook one meal a week featuring at least 90% local ingredients
  2. You define local - the standard definitions range from 100, to 150 to 200 miles
  3. Ingredients can be things you grew and preserved yourself, sourced from local farms and markets, or purchased at the store
  4. Write about the meals you cook, your challenges finding ingredients, why you’re eating local or whatever else strikes your fancy for each recap. Photos are optional.
  5. Include friends and family in your sourcing and eating as possible

One local meal a week?  That’s doable, right?  Check out the details here.  If it interests you, you can sign up at their site. I signed up, so you can expect to be seeing regular blog posts about the experience.  That means that any of you who haven’t jumped into the phenom that is blogging already will have the chance to post here in the comments about your own experiences with the adventure.

Hey, there’s several months of winter to look forward to.  Personally, I think marking time with one unique and tasty meal a week is not a bad way to go at all.

Chomp!

Thanks to Caitlin for the tip.
