More About the Food Crisis
I spent some time poking around after the post yesterday, and I found a few interesting things. One is this interactive map from The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), where you can click on individual countries and see what’s currently being reported. IFPRI also has a 40-page report on the 2008 food crisis situation, which I haven’t had time to read yet. If you’re interested, check it out at the link.
To conceptualize the crisis differently, Strategic Forecasting developed a static map, which you can see here.
And, to at least partially address Mangochild’s comment in yesterday’s post, the Wall Street Journal has an interactive map up showing who is a net grain producer and who is a net grain consumer worldwide. It certainly doesn’t create a complete picture of global food production, distribution, and consumption, but it’s an interesting place to start. You can get an idea of it here, but go to the WSJ site to get the benefits of the interactive features.

Thanks for posting that link, the distribution of food production is something that really gnaws at me. The GHI interactive was really eye-opening. Especially seeing how some of the most populated countries are ranked “low” or “critical”. I am passing along the grain production/consumption link and the other links as well to a couple friends with whom I have been discussing this too….
